Madurai Shanmukhavadivu (M.S.) SUBBULAKSHMI (September 16, 1916 – December 11, 2004), an Indian Carnatic Vocalist from Tamil Nadu, was the first musician ever to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour. She was also the first Indian musician to receive the Ramon Magsaysay award, Asia's highest civilian award, in 1974. She was also honoured as the court-singer of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams. She has given more than 200 charity concerts and raised well over Rs. 10,000,000.
