LAKSHMI BAI (c.19 November 1835 :: 17 June 1858), known as , or the queen of the Jhansi, was one of the leading figures of the of 1857, and a symbol of to British rule in India.

She was born in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India and was named ; she was nicknamed as Manu.

She was married to the Maharaja of Jhansi, Raja Rao, in 1842, whereafter she was called Lakshmibai.

She was the queen of the princely state of Jhansi, which is situated in the northern part of India.

She was the who began the Indian Revolution against British Colonialism, and is one of the most famous of India.

She became a national and was seen as the epitome of in India.

The first female unit of 's Indian National Army was named after her.

Indian poetess Chauhan (1904 :: 1948) wrote a poem titled Jhansi Ki Rani in the Veer Ras style about her, which is still recited by of contemporary India.

After the death of the raja in November 1853, the British authorities rejected Damodar Rao's (his son) claim to the and annexed the state to its territories. In March 1854, Lakshmibai was given a and was ordered to leave the .
