25.  The Heritage of India

I stood beside the India Gate.

How majestic is that gate!

It is a symbol of India’s pride,

So open, it has nothing to hide.

I saw Qutab Minar in its towering height

To which many a pigeon made a flight.

Notable it is for its Islamic construction

And for its fine geometric ornamentation.

The wonder of wonders the Taj Mahal is,

How magnificent its central dome is!

How symmetrical its architecture is!

How gorgeous its ornamentation is!

The Muslim rulers have bequeathed our country

A rich heritage of artistic beauty.

The antique symmetry of every monument

Is that beauty’s chief constituent

How wonderful the Mughal Gardens are !

How fragrant their flowers are !

How resplendent their colours are!

You cannot forget what they are.
