General |
- Its official name is Democratic Socialist republic of
Sri Lanka.
- An island country in South Asia, located in the Indian
Ocean to the southwest of the Bay of Bengal and to the
southeast of the Arabian Sea.
- Capital and Largest city: Colombo
- There is ample evidence of pre-historic human
settlements dating back to at least 125,000 years.
- Its recent history has been marred by a 30-year civil
war, which decisively ended when the Sri Lanka Armed Forces
defeated the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in
2009.
- It has many cultures, languages and ethnicities. The
majority of the population is from the Sinhalese ethnicity,
while a large minority of Tamils have also played an
influential role in the island's history.

Indo-Sri Lanka Accord - 1987 |
July 29, 1987 -
Signed in Colombo
- It was an accord signed in Colombo on 29 July, 1987,
between Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi
and Sri Lankan President J. R. Jayewardene.
- The accord was expected to resolve the
ongoing Sri Lankan civil war.
- Under the terms of the agreement, Colombo agreed to a
devolution of power to the provinces, the
Sri Lankan troops were to be withdrawn to their barracks in
the north and the Tamil rebels were to surrender
their arms.

Civil War |
Operation Pawan was the code name assigned to the operation by
the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) to take control of Jaffna
from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), better known
as the Tamil Tigers.
- October 07, 1987: The Chief
of Army Staff (CoAS) issued directives to the IPKF, laying
down its operational parameters.
- October 09, 1987: On the
nights of 9 and 10 October, the IPKF raided and captured the
LTTE radio station and TV station, while the printing
presses of two LTTE-sponsored newspapers were destroyed.
- October 11, 1987: The first
major battle under Operation Pawan was started with assault
on Jaffna University.
- October 25, 1987: IPKF had
wrested control of Jaffna and other major cities from the
LTTE; while the battle had been won but it wasn't yet over.
- November 28, 1987: The major
operations came to an end with the fall of Jaffna Fort on
this day.
- December 05, 1995: On this
day, the Sri Lanka government announced the conquest of
Tamil stronghold of Jaffna.
- May 18, 2009:
The LTTE was finally defeated by the Sri Lankan government,
ending almost 26 years of fighting between the two sides.
