INDIA - MEGHALAYA January 21, 1972:   Meghalaya was formed, in terms of the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganization) Act, 1971,  by carving out two districts from the state of Assam: the United Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills, and the Garo Hills as a full-fledged state of India on this day.
