Description
  • A mountain pass in the Himalayas on the Indo–China border connecting the Indian state of Sikkim with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.
  • A part of an offshoot of the ancient Silk Road.
  • Nathu La is one of the three trading border posts between China and India; the other two are Shipkila in Himachal Pradesh and Lipulekh (or Lipulech) in Uttarakhand.
  • It was sealed by India after the 1962 Sino-Indian War, and was re-opened on this day following various bilateral trade agreements.
  • Finally, after a decade of talks, Nathu La was opened on 6 July 2006. The date of the reopening, which also formally recognised Tibet as part of China by India and Sikkim's accession to India, coincided with the birthday of the reigning Dalai Lama.

  • 1934 to 1938:   At the age of 33, he became the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta.

  • 1944:   Amidst communalist and separatist actions of Muslim League, he emerged as a spokesman for Hindus and joined Hindu Mahasabha and in 1944, he became its President.
  • April 19, 1950: He resigned after the Delhi Pact was signed totally ignoring his views on the issue. So, he became the first Indian Cabinet Minister to resign from Union Cabinet in the history of free India.He was firmly opposed to Nehru's invitation to the Pakistani PM, and their joint pact to establish minority commissions and guarantee minority rights in both countries. He had differences with Nehru over the plight of Hindus in East Pakistan.
  • October 21, 1951:   Finally, he founded the Bhartiya Jana Sangh on this day at Delhi and became its first President.
  • May 11, 1953:   A massive satyagraha was launched in opposition to the special status granted to Kashmir. When he went to visit Kashmir in 1953, he was arrested there on this day and died as detenu on June 23, 1953, and No post-mortem was ordered.
  • August 27, 1998:   The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation named a bridge after Mookerjee.
  • 2001:   In 2001, the main research funding institute of the Government of India, CSIR instituted a new fellowship named after him. The Syama Prasad Mukhejee Fellowship is the most prestigious fellowship given in India for doing PhD.
  • April 22, 2010:   Municipal Corporation of Delhi's newly constructed Rs. 650-crore building (the tallest building in Delhi) was named "Doctor Syama Prasad Mukherjee Civic Centre".

  • Mookerjee himself condemned the murder.
  • At the instance of Mahatma Gandhi, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru inducted him in the Interim Central Government as a Minister for Industry and Supply.

  • BJS was opposed to appeasement of India's Muslims, and favoured free-market economics as opposed to the socialist policies pursued by Nehru.
  • The BJS also favoured a uniform civil code governing personal law matters for both Hindus and Muslims, wanted to ban cow slaughter and end the special status given to the Muslim-majority state of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The BJS founded the Hindutva agenda which became the wider political expression of India's Hindu majority.
  • But as a result of Mukherjee’s martyrdom, the permit system, the post of Sadat-e-Riyasat and of Prime Minister of Jammu & Kashmir were removed by the Govt. of India.

  • July 06, 1989:   On this day also, a fire had broken out at Uphaar cinema due to a fault in the sub station.
  • June 13, 1997:   One of the worst fire tragedies in recent Indian history of Delhi.
  • July 27, 1997:   The owners of the cinema were finally arrested in Mumbai on , and sent to judicial custody, though were later released on bail.
  • April 24, 2003:   It won ₹25 crore compensation for the relatives and families of the victims in the case vide high court verdict on this day.
  • October 13, 2011:   However the Supreme Court on this day, nearly halved the sum of compensation awarded to them by the Delhi high court and slashed punitive damages to be paid by cinema owners Ansal brothers from ₹2.5 crore to ₹25 lakh.
  • August 19, 2015:   Supreme court of India imposed a fine on Ansal brothers for ₹ 30 crores each and held that their jail terms will be reduced to the term already undergone by them if they pay the fine, considering their old age.
Description
  •  59 people died, mostly due to suffocation, and 103 were seriously injured in the resulting stampede.
  • The victims of the tragedy and the families of the deceased filed the landmark Civil compensation case.
  • It is now considered a breakthrough in civil compensation law in India.
  • The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Licensing) who inspected Uphaar, had listed ten serious violations, however all remained uncorrected until the fire 14 years later.
