March 30, 1699:   He instituted the Khalsa Panth at Keshgarh Sahib in Punjab He baptized the five selected followers (Panj piyare) in Pahul ceremony These Punj Piyare formed the nucleus of sikh military brotherhood called Khalsa Five special characteristics given to them were: Kesh (unshorn hair), Kachha (short drawers), Kara (steel bracelet), Kangha (comb) and Kirpan (sword) Suffix 'Singh' was added to their names Guru Grantha Sahib was declared as the future perennial Guru of the Sikhs.
