fought on this day between the forces of Hem Chandra
Vikramaditya (Hemu), the Hindu ruler of north India from
Delhi, and the army of Akbar. The resultant victory of Akbar

became the ruler of North India after he defeated Mughal
Emperor Akbar's army in the Battle of Delhi on this day,

Description |
- Earlier Hemu had acted as Prime Minister-cum-Chief of
Army of Afghan ruler Adil Shah Suri.
- He was a Hindu from Rewari in present day Haryana.
- On hearing of Hemu's serial victories and the fall of
large territories like Agra and Delhi, the Mughal army of
Akbar was demoralised and most of his commanders advised
Akbar to retreat to Kabul.
- Nevertheless, on November 5, 1556 the armies met at the
historic battlefield of Panipat, where, thirty years
earlier, Akbar's grandfather Babur had defeated Ibrahim Lodi
in the First Battle of Panipat.
- Hemu was on a stronger footing and was on the verge of
victory, when he was wounded in the eye by a stray arrow,
and collapsed unconscious. This triggered a panic in his
army and wounded Hemu was captured, beheaded and his head
was sent to Kabul where it was hung outside the Delhi
Darwaza while his body was hanged on a wooden frame outside
Purana Quila (old fort) in Delhi.
- After Hemu's death, thousands were beheaded and towers
of skulls were built with their heads, to instil terror
among the Hindus and Afghans.
