- Soon in the aftermath of
partition of India, his family
migrated to Delhi in October, 1947.
- Before that he served in Royal
Indian Navy, Karachi, for 2 years,
before being dismissed in April,
1946 for participating in Royal
Indian Navy mutiny.
- After partition, he served with
the Indian army for about 6 years.
- His first poem appeared in an
army publication, viz. Sainik
Samachar.
- He also used to sing the poems
he wrote.
- After getting due appreciation
of his talent, he was soon motivated
to leave the services and went to
Bombay with the prime objective of
becoming a singer. But since he
could not pass the voice test by the
All India Radio, eventually he
concentrated his efforts for
becoming a lyricist.
- He got his break for writing
songs in a film "Bhala Aadmi", 1958.
His first song in this film was "Dharti
Ke Laal Na Kar Itna Malaal"
which was recorded in Nov 1956.
