established the All India Home Rule League in Madras on this
day, to campaign for democracy in India and dominion status
within the Empire.
- 1877: She alongwith
her associates were prosecuted for publishing a book by
birth control campaigner Charles Knowlton.
- 1917: She was elected as
president of the India National Congress.
- June 16, 1917: Her arrest
was ordered on this day by the then Governor of Madras.

- At age 20 she married Frank Besant, but separated from
him over religious differences.
- She then became a prominent speaker for the National
Secular Society (NSS) and writer and a close friend of
Charles Bradlaugh.
- She also became involved in politics in India, joining
the Indian National Congress.
- After the war, she continued to campaign for Indian
independence and for the causes of theosophy, until her
death in 1933.
