- June 19, 1966 - He formed the Shiv Sena
with the intent of fighting for the rights of the natives of
the state of Maharashtra.
- July 28, 1999 - He was banned
from voting and contesting in any election for six
years from 11 December 1999 till 10
December 2005 on the recommendations of the
Election Commission for indulging in corrupt practice by
seeking votes in the name of religion.
- 2006- His nephew Raj Thackeray
broke away from Shiv Sena to form the Maharashtra
Navnirman Sena (MNS). This happened when
Bal Thackeray on his retirement from active politics
appointed his son, Uddhav, rather than Raj as the leader of
Shiv Sena.
- November 17, 2015 - The Chief Minister
of Maharashtra announced building of a memorial
For Bal Thackeray in Mumbai.
- March 26, 2016 - Pakistani American
terrorist David Coleman Headley disclosed before an
anti-terror court in Mumbai that LeT chief and 26/11
mastermind Hafiz Saeed had told him prior to the Mumbai
terror attacks that Shiv Sena chief late Bal Thackeray
“needed to be taught a lesson”. He further said "the person
who was sent to kill Thackeray, was arrested but he managed
to escape from police custody."
