This day is observed as the BANGLADESH ARMED FORCES DAY
(since 1971).
- March 25, 1971: Dacca University
students butchered - Pakistan's military ruler, Gen
Yahya Khan, ordered a crackdown on the liberation movement
in the then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) led by Sheikh
Mujibur Rahman. Tikka Khan Khan was appointed chief martial
law administrator of East Pakistan, now Bangladesh. Under
Gen Tikka Khan's command, the military carried out a
murderous assault on Dacca University, hotbed of the
Bangladeshi liberation struggle, and the Mukti Bahini on the
night of March 25, 1971, killing hundreds of youths. The
military carried out similar attacks in other parts of East
Pakistan, killing thousands more.
- September 28, 1971: The
official date of formation of the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF)
has been established on this day. BAF was formed with all
officers and airmen of Bengali origin serving in the
Pakistan Air Force prior to the war.
- October 08, 1971: BAF
was launched formally by the Government on this day.
- December 16, 1971: Pakistan
Army of 93,000 Officers and Soldiers surrendered to the
allied forces of Bangladesh and India, ending the Liberation
War of Bangladesh and the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971
simultaneously.
