Events / Works	December 11, 1858: He and Jadu Nath Bose became the first two Indians to be conferred the Bachelor of Arts degree from Calcutta University. 1859: He was appointed as Deputy Collector soon after he passed his graduation examination. 1865: His first Bengali romance, Durgeshnandini, was published in 1865. 1891: He continued to work in government service till 1891 when he got retired.
Developments	Author of India’s National Song 'Vande Mataram', originally a Bengali and Sanskrit stotra personifying India as a mother goddess and inspiring the activists during the Indian Freedom Movement. He got married when he was just 11 years old and his wife was only 5 years old. One of the greatest novelists and poets of India. He started his literary career by writing verses. His novels have been translated in almost all major languages of India. While he wrote a number of novels, his most famous novel was Anand Math, which contained the song "Bande Mataram", which was later adopted as National Song of India.
Commemorations	Bipin Chandra Pal named his patriotic journal as ‘Vande Mataram’ started in 1906. Lala Lajpat Rai also published his journal by the same name ‘Vande Mataram’.
