- He was an Indian National Congress
politician and the Chief Minister of
Punjab from 1992 to 1995.
- After completing his college
education,
he joined the army, but just two years
hence he switched over to social work
and politics.
- In 1969, he entered the
Punjab Vidhan Sabha as an independent
candidate.
- His tenure as the chief
minister of Punjab
witnessed the Punjab insurgency.
- Under
him, the Punjab Police crushed the
pro-Khalistan militancy with a heavy
hand.
- He was assassinated in a bomb blast
by a suicide bomber at the secretariat
complex in Chandigarh on August 31,
1995.
- The blast also claimed the lives
of 17 others including 3 Indian
commandos.
- Later in 2012, the standby
suicide bomber identified as Balwant
Singh Rajoana was sentenced to death by
a Chandigarh court.
- But the execution
was stayed by the government of India on
clemency sought by the then Chief
Minister of Punjab, Prakash Singh Badal.
