Jul 24, 1947: He and his wife flew to Java
and rescued Sultan Sjahrir, former PM of Indonesia, out on a
Dakota reaching India via Singapore on this day. For this act of
bravery, he was given honorary citizenship in Indonesia and
awarded the 'Bhoomi Putra', the highest Indonesian award, rarely
granted to a foreigner. In 1996, when Indonesia was celebrating
its 50th Independence Day, Biju Patnaik was awarded the highest
national award, the 'Bintang Jasa Utama'.
Oct 27, 1947: He piloted a plane and landed at
Srinagar Airport in the early morning. He brought 17 soldiers of
1-Sikh regiment to fight the Pakistani invaders. But for this
daring effort by him, mush more of Kashmir would have gone to
the enemy.

Oct 02, 1963: He retired as the Chief Minister

of the 8th Vidhan Sabha of Odisha.
Mar 05, 1990: He became the Chief Minister of
Odisha.
Mar 15, 1995: He retired as the Chief Minister
of Odisha.
Mar 25, 1985: He resigned from the membership
of the 8th Lok Sabha of the Indian Parliament.
