- September 05, 1839: The
First Opium War began in China on this day. Also called the
Anglo-Chinese war, it was fought when Britain was smuggling
opium from British India into China, which the latter
resisted.
- January 20, 1841: China
ceded Hong Kong to Great Britain after the Opium War.
- October 08, 1856: The
Second Opium War between several western powers and China
began on this day. The Second Opium War, the Second
Anglo-Chinese War, the Second China War, the Arrow War, or
the Anglo-French expedition to China, was a war pitting the
British Empire and the Second French Empire against the Qing
Dynasty of China, lasting from 1856 to 1860. It was fought
over similar issues as the First Opium War.
- July 01, 1997: The transfer
of sovereignty over Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to
China, referred to as "the Handover" internationally or "the
Return" in China, took place on this day. The landmark event
marked the end of British rule in Hong Kong.

Description |
Hong Kong's territory was
acquired from three separate treaties: the Treaty of Nanking in
1842, the Treaty of Beijing in 1860, and The Convention for the
Extension of Hong Kong Territory in 1898, which gave the UK the
control of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon (area south of Boundary
Street), and the New Territories (area north of Boundary Street
and south of the Shenzhen River, and outlying islands),
respectively. |
