- 2006: He was awarded the
second highest civilian honour of India, PADMA
VIBHUSHAN.
- 2009: He received the Great
Maratha Award.

- He also served as the Principal Secretary to Prime
Minister Charan Singh.
- He was the Cabinet Secretary (1981-1985) when
Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India.
- He is the grandson of R. Ramachandra Rao, then Collector
of Nellore, who helped Srinivasa Ramanujan, the great
mathematician of India, during latter's formative years.
- Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, former President of India,
credited him of propelling the idea of Integrated Guided
Missile Programme of India during the 1980s, when there was
tremendous criticism from the Armed forces that, not a
single missile had been successfully developed so far.
