- He was the maker of classics of
1950s and 1960s such as Pyaasa,
Kaagaz Ke Phool, Sahib Bibi Aur
Ghulam and Chaudhvin Ka Chand.
- In 1953, He married Geeta Dutt,
a well-known playback singer,
despite intensive opposition from
his family.
- After his schooling, he joined
the performing arts troupe of Uday
Shankar, the elder brother of the
better-known Ravi Shankar.
- He joined the Prabhat Film
Company in Pune in 1944.
- After the expiry of his 3 years
contract he was unemployed for some
time during which he was writing
short stories in magazines.
- His first film, Navketan's
Baazi, was released
in 1951, which was an immediate
great success.
- Thereafter his other film ‘Aar
Paar’, released in 1954 was
a great success, followed by many
more successes till 1959 when his
film ‘Kaagaz ke Phool’
resulted in a box-office disaster.
- In 1964 he acted in his last
film Sanjh Aur Savera directed by
Hrishikesh Mukherjee opposite Meena
Kumari.
