May 16, 2010:
This witnessed over 50,000 weddings in Mumbai alone. This
day happened to be Akshaya Tritiya, one of the most
auspicious days for weddings, according to the Hindu
calendar.
Apr 01, 1930: Minimum marriageable ages
for girls and boys were fixed at 14 and 18 years
respectively.
Description
The mad rush for marriages on this day was attributed to
the fact that May 16 was the first auspicious
wedding date in almost five months. There were no
wedding dates between December 14, 2009 and May 14, 2010.
Furthermore, this day also happened to fall on a
Sunday, thereby adding to the mad rush.
All marriage halls, caterers, decorators, mehendi
artistes, etc, in the city had their hands full.
