Description |
Triggered by conspired burning of a train in Godhra on 27
February 2002, which caused the deaths of 58 Hindu pilgrims
karsevaks returning from Ayodhya, the 2002 Gujarat riots was a
three-day period of inter-communal violence in Gujarat, that
resulted in hunfreds of deaths and thousands of injured besides
considerable damage to the national property. The after effects
of this violence had adverse effects on the normal life of the
citizens for several months. |

Despite government's restrictions, many activists left for
Ayodhya, by Sabarmati Express as well as by other means of
transport. |

Mar 11, 2002: |
VHP rejected govt's request not to send karsevaks to Ayodhya and
decided to send 1000 karsevaks by Sabarmati Express for Puja at
Ayodhya. |

Police crackdown was started on rioters and looters. |

Despite peace calls from various social quartes, violent
incidents continued to be reported from different places. |

National Human Rights Commission rejected Gujarat government's

Many social groups and organizations started appealing for
maintaining peace.

Gujarat government announced compensation for the victims.

Violence continued at many places. Official death toll rose to
over 500. Ongoing school examinations were postponed for a
fortnight.

Prime suspect in Godhra carnage was reportedly held. Migrant
labour in Gujarat started fleeing out of fear. Narendra Modi,
the then Chief Minister of Gujarat refused to step down. Many
places were under curfew. |

Violence flared up all over Gujarat. Fresh army forces called to
quell violence. |

VHP gave a call for the Bharat Bandh. BJP supported Bandh in
Gujarat. All round violence incidents continued. |

Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) called for a Gujarat Bandh. Spread
of all round violence was seen. |

Feb 27, 2002: |
A compartment of Sabarmati Express carrying Hindu pilgrims was
burnt. Resultant violence erupted all over Gujarat.
