- 1994: Hijras were granted
voting rights in 1994 in India.
- 1998: Shabnam "Mausi" Bano
is the first transgender Indian or Hijra to be elected to
public office. She was an elected member of the Madhya
Pradesh State Legislative Assembly from 1998 to 2003.
- December 09, 2011: Kamala
Kinnar, a eunuch, was elected mayor of Sagar town of Madhya
Pradesh in November 2009. However, the district court on
this day declared Kamala Kinnar's election as "null and
void" because the mayor's seat was reserved for a 'woman'
belonging to scheduled caste category. Same thing had
happened earlier in 2003 with Kamla Jaan, elected in 1999 as
Mayor of katni in Madhya Pradesh.
- February 23, 2012: Ministry
of Home Affairs, Govt of India, expressed its opposition to
the decriminalisation of homosexual activity, stating that
in India, homosexuality is seen as being immoral.
- February 28, 2012: The
Central Government of India reversed its stand on this day,
asserting that there was no legal error in decriminalising
homosexual activity.
- January 27, 2014: A
committee was formed by the government of Inida to conduct a
study on all transgender issues.
- April 15, 2014: Supreme
Court of India declared transgender people as a socially and
economically backward class entitled to reservations in
Education and Job, and also directed union and state
governments to frame welfare schemes for them.
- January 04, 2015:
Independent candidate Madhu Bai Kinnar was elected as the
Mayor of Raigarh, Chhattisgarh becoming India's first openly
transgender mayor.
- January 26, 2015: Padmini
Prakash became India's first transgender television anchor.
- April 15, 2015: Supreme Court declared
transgender people to be a ‘third gender’, and gave them the
right to self-identification of their gender as male,
female, or third-gender.
- April 24, 2015: The Rajya
Sabha passed the Rights of Transgender Persons Bill, 2014
guaranteeing rights and entitlements, reservations in
education and jobs (2% reservation in government jobs),
legal aid, pensions, unemployment allowances and skill
development for transgender people.
- June 09, 2015: The world got its
first transwoman college principal when Manabi Bandopadhyay
took charge of Krishnagar Women's College in West Bengal on
this day.
- November 06, 2015: The
court gave directions to the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services
Recruitment Board (TNUSRB) to appoint her as a sub-inspector
of police as she is entitled to get the job and also to
include
transgender people as a "third category", apart from
the usual category of "male" and "female".
- July 20, 2016: In order to
empowering transgenders, the Union Cabinet of India
approved The Transgender Persons (Protection of
Rights) Bill, 2016, which puts in place provisions for
stringent punishment, including imprisonment up to two
years, for offences against them.
- February 12, 2017: Two
transgender people were appointed by the Kolhapur District
Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) as panel members for the
Lok Adalat (People’s Court).
- April 2017: Ministry of
Drinking Water and Sanitation instructed states to allow
transgender people to use the public toilet of their choice.
- April 04, 2017: A new era
for the transgenders started on this day, when
K.
Prithika Yashini joined the Tamil Nadu police force
after completing her one-year training, thereby becoming the
first transgender person to become a police officer in
India.
- July 03, 2017: The Indira
Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has announced that
it will waive off the fees for transgender students, in all
the courses that it offers. An official said that this has
been done to integrate the special group with the
mainstream. He added that all the study material will also
be provided free of cost.
