Description |
- Lohri symbolizes prayer to AGNI for good
crops and prosperity.
- It is also the occasion for BHANGRA,
dhol, gidda and the like.
- It is celebrated as BHOGI in Andhra
Pradesh.
- It is celebrated as BIHU in Assam.
- In the evening, a BONFIRE is lit and
everyone gathers around it.
- It conveys the message about the bond of
BROTHERHOOD.
- DULLA BHATTI, a Punjabi version of Robin
Hood, who robbed the rich and helped the
poor, is praised on this day.
- Hindus purify their sins on this day by
taking bath in the GANGES.
- The festival is spread over three days
in South India and also signifies the
beginning of HARVESTING.
- The INGREDIENTS of prasad include til,
gazak, gur, rewri, moongphali, phuliya
and popcorn.
- It is celebrated as MAKARA Sankranti in
Central India.
- This day begins with children collecting
MONEY from homes in neighbourhood.
MUNCHIES collected from each house, are
also thrown into the fire.
- One famous song sung by children on this
day is titled " Sunder MUNDRIYE ….".
- Lohri is also the symbol of the spirit
of ONENESS, despite all odds.
- Puja is performed by way of PARIKRAMA
around the bonfire.
- It is celebrated as SANKRANTI in
Karnataka, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
- The earth, farthest from the sun at this
point of time, starts its journey
towards the sun, thus heralding in the
onset of SPRING.
- The period, beginning from 14 January
lasting till 14 July, is known as
UTTARAYAN.
- It signifies the beginning of the end of
WINTER.
