Description |
- It was formed on 2 September 1946 from the newly
elected Constituent Assembly of India, had the task of
assisting the transition of India and Pakistan from British
rule to independence.
- All political prisoners, who were arrested and jailed
for having participated in the Quit India Movement, were
released by the British authorities soon after the end of
World War II.
- The British Cabinet Mission of 1946 sent to India aimed
to discuss and plan for the transfer of power from the
British Government to Indian leadership, providing India
with independence.
- The mission’s main objectives included:
- Hold preparatory discussions with elected
representatives of British India and the Indian states
in order to secure agreement as to the method of framing
the constitution.
- Set up a constitution body.
- Set up an Executive Council with the support of the
main Indian parties.
- Both Indian National Congress and the Muslim League
agreed to participate in the elections for a constituent
assembly.
- While the Congress had clear majorities in eight of the
eleven provinces of British India, the Muslim League won the
seats allocated to the Muslim electorate.
- After lot of thinking the other way, ultimately Muslim
League agreed to nominate five members for the interim
government.
- So finally, the interim government of India was formed
with the following Ministers:

- Thereafter, the constituent assembly kept struggling
hard with the daunting and challenging task of drafting a
constitution for independent India.
