- March 24, 1946: The British
Cabinet Mission members arrived in India on this day to
discuss and plan the modalities for the transfer of power
from the British Raj to Indian leadership.
- February 20, 1947: Attlee’s
announcement: The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
announced on this day that (i) British Government would
grant full self-government to British India by June 1948 at
the latest, and (ii) The future of Princely States would be
decided after the date of final transfer is decided.
- June 03, 1947: Under the
Mountbatten Plan, the British government announced these
principles: (i) Principle of Partition of India was accepted
by the British Government, (ii) Successor governments
would be given dominion status and (iii) Implicit right to
secede from the British Commonwealth.
- July 18, 1947: The Indian
Independence Act 1947 is an Act of the Parliament of the
United Kingdom that partitioned British India into the two
new independent dominions of India and Pakistan. The Act
received the royal assent on this day. It was part of the
implementation of the Mountbatten Plan.
- August 15, 1947: This date
was declared as the appointed date for the partition of
India into two dominion states. Termination of British
suzerainty over the princely states, with effect from this
date, such states will have the right to accede to either
dominion.
- March 31, 1948: The power
of the Governor General of India to introduce any change in
the plan for transfer of power will be effective till this
date,
after that it was open to the constituent assembly to modify
or adopt the same Act.
