An English-language, Indian daily newspaper published by the Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd. 

It began publication in 1961.

Presently, it is the world's second-most widely read English-language business newspaper, after the Wall Street Journal, with a readership close to 1 million.

  • March 06, 1961:   India's first financial daily was launched on this day by Times of India group.   
Amrit Bazar Patrika

It was started by Sisir Ghosh and Moti Lal Ghosh, sons of Hari Naryan Ghosh, a rich merchant from Magura, in District Jessore, in Bengal Province of British Empire in India. The family had constructed a Bazar and named it after Amritamoyee, wife of Hari Naryan Ghosh. Sisir Ghosh and Moti Lal Ghosh started Amrita Bazar Patrika as a weekly first. It was first edited by Moti Lal Ghosh, who did not have formal University Degree. The paper was popular for its honest reporting and caustic reporting. It had built its readership as a rival to Bengalee which was being looked after by Surendera Nath Banerjee. It was an English daily newspaper published from Kolkata and other locations such as Cuttack, Ranchi and Allahabad.   

  • February 20, 1868:   Debuted on this day.  It was one of the oldest newspapers in India; it was launched in Bengali.
Illustrated Weekly

It was an English language weekly newsmagazine publication in India.

Simply known as Weekly by its readership, The Illustrated Weekly of India was considered to be an important English language publication in India for over a century.

The magazine was edited by A.S. Raman, Khushwant Singh, M. V. Kamath, and Pritish Nandy.

Cartoons in the latter half of the magazine were by R. K. Laxman and Mario.

  • January 03, 1880:   It originally started publication (as Times of India Weekly Edition, later renamed as The Illustrated Weekly of India in 1923) and ceasing publication in 1993.
  • Nov 13, 1993 (Final issue): In 1993, the publication industry became intensely competitive and the magazines published by the Times of India were losing money. Samir Jain, boldly decided to end the publication of The Illustrated Weekly of India, Dharmyug, and other magazines to focus on revitalisation of the newspapers.
Mathrubhumi Illustrated Weekly

Authors such as M. T. Vasudevan Nair and N. V. Krishna Warrier served as the editors of the magazine.

  • January 18, 1932: Mathrubhumi Azhchappathippu (English: Mathrubhumi Illustrated Weekly) is an Indian general interest weekly magazine published by the Mathrubumi Printing and Publishing Company in Kozhikode. The Malayalam language magazine started publishing on this day.
Mumbai Samachar
  • July 01, 1822:  Launching of Asia's First Daily - Originally it was called Mumbaina Samachar, launched by Fardoonji Marzban in Bombay. 
Samachar Darpan

The Bombay Samachar, now Mumbai Samachar, is the oldest continuously published newspaper in India.

Established in 1822 by Fardunjee Marzban, it is published in Gujarati and English.

  • May 31, 1818:   It was the First vernacular newspaper in Bengali. It was first published on this day by William Carey and Joshua Marshman from Serampore.
Hicky's Bengal Gazette (Calcutta General Advertiser)

An English language weekly newspaper published in Kolkata. The first newspaper printed in Asia. It was published for two years, before the East India Company seized the newspaper's types and printing press. Founded by James Augustus Hicky, a highly eccentric Irishman, a strong critic of the administration of the Governor General Warren Hastings.

  • January 29, 1780:   India's first NEWSPAPER, Hicky's Bengal Gazette or the Calcutta General Advertiser, was first published in English at Calcutta on this day.     
  • March 23, 1782:   It was a weekly newspaper, and was founded in Calcutta, the capital of British India. The paper ceased publication on this day.
The Hindu

An Indian daily newspaper. Headquartered at Chennai, it was published weekly when it was launched in 1878, and started publishing daily in 1889. It is one of the two Indian newspapers of record.It has its largest base of circulation in southern India, and is the most widely read English daily newspaper in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Telangana, Karnataka.The newspaper and other publications in The Hindu Group are owned by a family-held company, Kasturi and Sons Ltd. Most of the revenue comes from advertising and subscription. The Hindu became, in 1995, the first Indian newspaper to offer an online edition.

  • Sep 20, 1878: Madras weekly HINDU was founded on this day, subsequently it was converted into a daily newspaper with effect from Apr 01, 1889.
  • Jun 27, 2003: Narasimham Ram was appointed as its editor-in-chief on this day.
  • Jul 30, 2011: Siddharth Varadarajan, the national bureau chief of The Hindu, was appointed editor of The Hindu.
  • Sep 16, 2013: The Hindu group launched its Tamil edition with K. Ashokan as editor.
  • Dec 02, 2015: For the first time since its founding in 1878, the newspaper did not publish a print edition in Chennai on this day, as workers were unable to reach the press building owing to severe floods.
