Sale on Highways |
- December 15, 2016: The
Supreme Court of India had ordered that all establishments,
which sell liquor within 500 metres of national and state
highways across the country, would have to shut shop and
relocate. It also ordered the removal of all liquor banners
and advertisements on highways and said the shops must not
be visible from the national and state highways.
- March 31, 2017: Starting
April 01, all liquor shops within 500 metres of national and
state highways across the country will have to shut down
following an order passed by the Supreme Court on this day.
- The Court, however, exempted Sikkim, Meghalaya and
Himachal Pradesh and also areas with a population of up
to 22,000 people from the ban.
- The licenses which were given before December 15,
2016, would be valid till September 30, 2017 in
Telangana and till June 30, 2017 in Andhra Pradesh.
- April 01, 2017: All
establishments, which sell liquor within 500 metres of
national and state highways across the country, Have been
shut down and removed/relocated pursuant to Supreme Court's
order of March 31, 2017.
- September 30, 2017: Last
date for the shut down and removal/relocation of liquor
vending ouutlets with in 500 meters of the national and
state highways in Telengana State.
- June 30, 2017: Last date
for the shut down and removal/relocation of liquor vending
ouutlets with in 500 meters of the national and state
highways in Andhra Pradesh State.

Ban / Prohibition in Bihar |
- November 26, 2015: Bihar
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced that alcohol would be
banned in the state from 1 April 2016.
- April 05, 2016: The CM
officially declared the total ban on this day on alcohol
consumption, and said in a press conference:
- "All type of liquor will be banned in the
state from today. Sale and consumption of any type of
alcohol in hotels, bars, clubs and any other place will
be illegal from today onwards."
- Violating the law carries a penalty of 5 years to 10
years imprisonment.
- September 30, 2016: Bihar
High Court ruled that the ban is "illegal, impractical and
unconstitutional".
- October 03, 2016: Bihar
government approached Supreme Court of India challenging the
High Court order.
- October 07, 2016: The
Supreme Court bench stayed the high court order, saying
inter alia "Ban on liquor and fundamental rights do not go
together".
- October 25, 2016: Bihar
Government decided to renew liquor licences of canteens in
cantonment areas, military and air force stations for
2016-2017 in the "interest of soldiers".
- January 21, 2017: More than
3 crore (30 million) people of Bihar joined hands to form a
historic human chain along 12,760 km of roads to support ban
on alcohol by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. This
unprecedented and massive human chain was supported by
people from all walks of life, political parties and the
Prime Minister of India.
