Description
  • One of the two major political parties in India, along with the Indian National Congress.
  • As of 2018, it is the country's largest political party in terms of representation in the national parliament and state assemblies, and it is the world's largest party in terms of primary membership.
  • It has close ideological and organisational links to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
  • Its origin lies in the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, formed in 1951 by Syama Prasad Mukherjee.
  • After the State of Emergency in 1977, the Jana Sangh merged with several other parties to form the Janata Party, which defeated the Congress party in 1977 general elections.
  • In 1980, however, Janata Party was dissolved and the members of the erstwhile Jana Sangh re-gathered to form the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which managed to emerge as the largest party in the Indian Parliment in 1996 let by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, but due to lack of majority in the lok sabha, it could not survive for more than 13 days.
  • After the 1998 general election, NDA, the BJP-led coalition formed the government at the centre with Atal Bihari Vajpayee as the Prime Minister, which continued to rule after the fresh elections after about a year; then onwards the NDA led government lasted for the full term - the first non-Congress government to be able to do so.
  • BJP registered a landslide victory in the 2014 general election and got the absolute majority in Lok Sabha.

Feb 27, 2002 A train carrying Hindu pilgrims was burned outside the town of Godhra, killing 59 Hindu pilgrims; it sparked off massive anti-Muslim violence across the state of Gujarat that lasted several weeks and heavy death toll.
Oct 13, 1999 NDA won 303 seats in parliament; an outright majority. The BJP had its highest ever tally of 183. Atal Bihari Vajpayee became Prime Minister for the third time; L.K. Advani became Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister.

Dec 06, 1992 RSS and its affiliates organised a rally involving more than 100,000 VHP and BJP activists at the site of the Babri mosque in Ayodhya, which is believed to have been constructed by demolishing the then and there exiastinf Temple devoted to Lord Rama. Under circumstances the rally developed into a frenzied attack that ended with the demolition of the Babri mosque.
Jun 23, 1953 In his endeavour to the cause of integrating Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was martyred. He was detained for 45 days for violating Article 370 of the Indian constitution which sought Indians to obtain permit for entering Kashmir. The entire country was shocked by his death in prison and consequently the permit system was ended.
Jul 12, 1949 Having failed in establishing the truthfulness of the charges levelled against the RSS, the then Congress government unconditionally lifted the ban on RSS and also released M.S. Golwalkar and other RSS workers from custody.
Feb 05, 1948 RSS was banned on this day by the then Congress government.
Feb 01, 1948 Consequent upon the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi by Nathu Ram Godse, M.S. Golwalkar along with 17,000 workers of RSS were arrested by the Congress government.
Oct 19, 1947 On this day, M.S. Golwalkar of RSS informed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel that Maharaja Hari Singh was ready to accede his kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir to the Dominion of India.
Oct 17, 1947 The second chief of the RSS, viz. Madhavrao Sadashivrao Golwalkar (a.k.a. Guruji) flew to Srinagar to persuade Maharaja Hari Singh of Jammu and Kashmir to accede to the Dominion of India.
Sep 27, 1925 Inspired by the zeal of public service and the spirit of nationalisation of many Indian leaders of that time, Dr. Kesava Rao Balram Hedgewar founded the Rashtriya Swayansevak Sangh (RSS).
