- December 28, 1885: Indian
National Congress - Founded. Its first ever session was
also held on this day which lasted till December 31, 1885
under its first ever President, viz. Womesh Chandra
Bannerjee:
- December 31, 1885: INC's first
ever session (of 4 days) ended on this day.
- December 31, 1929: The flag
of India had been hoisted by Congress President Jawaharlal
Nehru on this day, in Lahore, modern-day Pakistan, where
currently the Minar-e-Pakistan stands.
- January 26, 1930: SWARAJ
DAY Declaration: The Purna Swaraj declaration,
or Declaration of the Independence of India was promulgated
by the Indian National Congress on this day, resolving the
Congress and Indian nationalists to fight for Purna Swaraj,
or complete self-rule independent of the British Empire. The
Congress asked the people of India to observe 26 January as
Independence Day. The flag of India was hoisted publicly
across India by Congress volunteers, nationalists and the
public.
- February 14, 1930:
CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE - The Working Committee of the Indian
National Congress met at Sabarmati and passed a resolution
for civil disobedience movement.
- January 11, 1966: A day
after signing the Tashkent Declaration, Shastri died in
Tashkent – reportedly due to a heart attack but the
circumstances of his death remain mysterious.
- June 12, 1975: High Court
of Allahabad declared Indira Gandhi's election to the Lok
Sabha as void on the grounds of electoral malpractice.
- June 25, 1975: On Indira
Gandhi's cabinet and government recommendations, the
President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed declared a State of Emergency
on this day based on the provisions of Article 352 of the
Constitution.
- January 23, 1977: During
the 19-month emergency, widespread oppression and abuse of
power took place by the authorities. This period of
oppression ended on this day, when Indira Gandhi released
all political prisoners and called fresh elections to the
Lok Sabha to be held in March.
- March 23, 1977: The
Emergency officially ended on this day. She also lost the
Lok Sabha election.
- January 02, 1978: She and
her followers seceded and formed a new opposition party,
popularly called Congress (I).

Description |
- The Indian National Congress (INC) is one of the two
major contemporary political parties in India, the other
being the Bharatiya Janata Party.
- It is one of the largest and oldest
democratically-operating political parties in the world.
- Its founders included Allan Octavian Hume Dadabhai
Naoroji and Dinshaw Wacha.
- In the following decades, INC emerged as pivotal
participant in the Indian Independence Movement, with over
15 million members and over 70 million participants in its
struggle against British colonial rule in India.
- After independence in 1947, it became the nation's
dominant political party.
- In the most recent general elections in 2014, the
Congress registered its worst performance in a general
election in independent India, winning only 44 seats of the
543-member house.
- December 2016: It is facing leadership
issues and dilemma.
