Description |
- The main battle tanks of the Indian army are Arjun MBT,
T-90 Bhishma, T-72 Ajeya and now defunct T-55 and Vijayanta
Tanks.
- Arjun Main Battle Tank had conclusively outperformed the
T-90.
- T-90 Bhishma Main Battle Tank: A total
of 800 T-90 tanks are present in service with Indian Army.
1000 more to be produced by Indian under license from Russia
by 2020.
- T-72 Ajeya Main Battle Tank Upgraded to advanced Ajeya
Mk1 and MK2 standard mainly based on Polish PT-91 Twardy
Tank features developed by DRDO. Around 2000 tanks are
present in service with Indian Army
- T-55 MBT and Vijayanta Tank: Both these
tanks are now withdrawn from service of Indian Army.

- December 12, 1965: VIJAYANTA TANK:
- On this day, the first Indian military tank
(produced with foreign collaboration) was rolled out of
the factory at Avadi in Tamil Nadu. India's first fully
indigenous tank is 'Arjun' that was rolled out in the
year 1993.
- September 8-10, 1965: Battle of Asal
Uttar:
- Indian Tanks proved their skills at the Battle of
Asal Uttar (8-10 september 1965), where they destroyed
more than 100 tanks, mostly M47 Pattons.
- May 17, 2010: The Arjun
Tank was pitted against the T-90 in comparative trials and
performed well. Consequently, the Indian Army placed an
order for an additional 124 Arjun Mk-I tanks on Aug 09, 2010
and 124 Arjun MK-II Tanks on this day.
- Aug 09, 2010: The Arjun Tank was pitted
against the T-90 in comparative trials and performed well.
Consequently, the Indian Army placed an order for an
additional 124 Arjun Mk-I tanks on May 17, 2010 and 124
Arjun MK-II Tanks on this day.
