- April 01, 1774:
Indian Postal Service was founded on this day.
- July 01, 1852: First half-Anna
adhesive stamp released in Karachi, undivided India, under
Scinde Dawk system, which refers to a very old postal system
of runners that served the Indus Valley of Sindh, in
pre-partition India. The term also refers to the first
postage stamps in Asia. Stamps were required for the
prepayment of postage, a basic feature of the new system.
- October 01, 1854: The first
all-India stamps were issued on this day.
- January 28, 1873: The
Government Savings Bank Act 1873 was passed by the
legislature on this day.
- July 01, 1879: First
postcard launched - This day signifies the
introduction of the first inland postcard priced at 1 Paisa
in British India.
- February 01, 1884: Postal
life insurance began on this day as a welfare measure for
the employees of the Posts & Telegraphs Department.
- March 06, 1897: The first
philatelic Society in India was founded in Bombay on this
day to service postage-stamp collections.
- March 22, 1898: The Indian
Post Office Act 1898 was passed by the legislature on this
day.
- July 01, 1898: The Indian
Post Office Act 1898 became effective on this day regulating
postal service.
- February 18, 1911: The
world's first official airmail flight took place in India on

- November 21, 1947: The
first new stamp was issued by independent India
on this day. It depicts the Indian flag with the slogan,
JAI HIND ("long live India"), at the top
right-hand corner. The stamp was valued at three and
one-half annas.
- August 15, 1948: A memorial
postage stamp in honour of Mahatma Gandhi was issued on this
day, the first anniversary of independence.
- August 15, 1972: The Postal
Index Number (PIN, or PIN code) is a six-digit code of
post-office numbering introduced on this day. There are nine
PIN regions in the country; the first eight are geographical
regions, and the ninth is reserved for the Army Postal
Service.
- April 01, 1982: Post Office
Savings Banks opened throughout India on this day.
- March 24, 1995: Postal life
insurance, that began in 1884 as a welfare measure for the
employees of the Posts & Telegraphs Department, was extended
to all rural residents on this day.
- July 11, 2011: The
Department of Posts inaugurated the National Philatelic
Museum on this day. It exhibits rare postage stamps from
around the world and provides a venue for philatelists to
exhibit their collections.
- March 22, 2013: The
Electronic Indian Postal Order (e-IPO) was introduced on
this day, initially only for citizens living abroad. The
postal orders can be used for online payment of fees for
access to information under the RTI Act of 2005.
- February 14, 2014: The
Electronic Indian Postal Order (e-IPO) service was expanded
to include all Indian citizens w.e.f. this day.

Information Technology of the Government of India.
- Indian postal service is also involved in other services
such as small-savings banking and financial services.
- The highest post office in the world is in
Hikkim, Himachal Pradesh operated by India Post at a height
of 15,500 ft (4,700 m).
- The India Posts PIN code system is organized in
the following way:
- The first digit indicates the region.
- The first two digits indicate the sub-region (or
postal circle).
- The first three digits indicate a sorting district.
- The last three digits indicate the delivery post
office.
