- January 06, 2004: 'Jaya Bharata
Jananiya Tanujate' was declared the official anthem of
Karnataka on this day.
- November 01, 1956: Kannada
Rajyotsava (Karnataka Formation Day) is
celebrated on November 01 every year. This was the day in
1956 when all the Kannada language-speaking regions of South
India were merged to form the Mysore State (later renamed as
state of Karnataka). The Rajyotsava day is listed as a
government holiday in the state of Karnataka and is
celebrated by Kannadigas across the world. It is marked by
the announcement and presentation of the honours list for
Rajyotsava Awards by the Government of Karnataka, hoisting
of the unofficial Karnataka flag with an address from the
Chief Minister and Governor of the state along with
community festivals, orchestra, Kannada book releases and
concerts.
- 1973: Formerly known as
Mysore State, it was renamed Karnataka.
- 1565: Karnataka and the
rest of South India experienced a major geopolitical shift
when the Vijayanagara empire fell to a confederation of
Islamic sultanates in the Battle of Talikota.
- 1830: Kittur Chennamma,
Sangolli Rayanna and others spearheaded rebellions in
Karnataka, nearly three decades before the Indian Rebellion
of 1857.

Description |
- The capital and largest city is Bangalore (Bengaluru).
- Kannada, one of the classical languages of India,
is the most widely spoken and official language of the
state.
- The two main river systems of the state are the Krishna
and its tributaries, the Bhima, Ghataprabha, Vedavathi,
Malaprabha, and Tungabhadra, in the north, and the Kaveri
and its tributaries, the Hemavati, Shimsha, Arkavati,
Lakshmana Thirtha and Kabini, in the south.
- With an antiquity that dates to the paleolithic,
Karnataka has been home to some of the most powerful empires
of ancient and medieval India.
- Karnataka has contributed significantly to both forms of
Indian classical music, the Carnatic and Hindustani
traditions.
