- February 08, 1665: The
British took possession of Bombay (now Mumbai) in India on
this day.
- December 18, 1930: Bombay Central:
This railway station was opened on this day by Sir
Frederick Sykes, the then Governor of Bombay.
- It is a major railway station on the Western lines,
situated in Mumbai, in an area known by the same name.
Designed by British architect Claude Batley, it serves
as a major stop for both local and inter-city/express
trains with separate platforms for them . It is also a
terminal for several long distance trains including
Mumbai Rajdhani Express. Trains depart from the station
connecting various destinations mostly across states in
the northern, eastern and north-eastern parts of India.
- May-01, 1960: On this day,
the State of Bombay, India, was bifurcated into two states
of Maharashtra and Gujarat. This day is also known as
Maharashtra Day or Maharashtra Diwas in Marathi; it is a
state holiday in Maharashtra, India commemorating the
formation of the state of Maharashtra. This day is also
celebrated as Gujarat Day in Gujarat.
- July 26, 2005 - Mumbai, India received
99.5cm of rain (39.17 inches) within 24 hours on this day,
bringing the city to a halt for over 2 days.
- June 08, 2014:
Mumbai Metro Rail was inauguraed on this day. It
was designed to reduce traffic congestion in the city, and
supplement the overcrowded Mumbai Suburban Railway network.
- It is a rapid transit system serving the city. It
will be built in three phases over a 15-year period,
with overall completion expected in 2021. When complete,
the core system will comprise three high-capacity metro
railway lines, spanning a total of 63 kilometres (39
mi). The system's first line entered operation on 8 June
2014, though some aspects of the project were afflicted
by delays and cost issues.

Description |
- India's second-most populous state and third-largest
state by area. •
- Area = over 307,713 sq.km. •
- Bordered by the Arabian Sea to the west and the Indian
states of Karnataka, Telangana, Goa, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh,
Madhya Pradesh and the Union territory of Dadra and Nagar
Haveli. •
- It is also the world's second-most populous subnational
entity. It has over 112 million inhabitants and its capital,
Mumbai, has a population of approximately 18 million. •
- Nagpur is Maharashtra's second capital as well as its
winter capital and Pune is its cultural capital. •
- The wealthiest and the most industrialized state in
India. •
- The state contributes about 25% of the country's
industrial output and 23.2% of its GDP (2010–11). •
- As of 2017, the GDP per capita increased to ₹165,000
(US$2,500). •
- Major rivers of the state are the Godavari and the
Krishna. The Narmada and Tapti Rivers flow near the border
between Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. •
- Ancient and medieval Maharashtra was ruled by the
Satavahana dynasty, Kadambas, Rashtrakuta dynasty, Western
Chalukyas, Deccan sultanates, Mughals and Marathas
respectively. •
- World Heritage Sites include the Ajanta caves and Ellora
caves. There are also numerous forts associated with the
life of Chhattrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
