Date-wise Events
  • September 21, 1949:   On this day, Maharaja Budhachandra signed a Treaty of Accession merging the kingdom into India. This merger is disputed by groups in Manipur as having been completed without consensus and under duress. The dispute has resulted in a 50-year insurgency in the state for independence from India, as well as in violence between ethnic groups in the state.
  • January 21, 1972:   On this day, it became the full-fledged State of the Indian Union.
  • March 20, 2017:   The nearly five-month-long economic blockade on the two National Highways of Manipur by the United Naga Council has come to an end since last night. This came after successful tripartite talks among the representatives of the Centre, new BJP State Government and the UNC at Senapati District Headquarters yesterday.
  • July 17, 2017:   Landlocked Manipur was cut off from the rest of India after Barak bridge, also known as the second lifeline of the border state, collapsed. The bridge collapsed when a 10-wheeler goods-laden truck was passing through it.
Description
  • It is a state in northeastern India, with the city of Imphal as its capital.
  • It is bounded by Nagaland to the north, Mizoram to the south, and Assam to the west; Burma (Myanmar) lies to its east.
  • It has a population of almost 3 million, including the Meetei, Kuki, Naga, and Pangal peoples, who speak Sino-Tibetan languages.
  • During the British Rule, the Kingdom of Manipur was one of the princely states.
  • Between 1917 and 1939, the people of Manipur pressed for their rights against the British Rule.
  • The Meetei ethnic group, represents 53% of the population of Manipur state. The main language of the state is Meeteilon (Manipuri).
  • According to 2011 census, Hinduism is the major religion in the state closely followed by Christianity. Other religions include Islam, Sanamahism, Buddhism etc.
  • Manipur has primarily an agrarian economy, with significant hydroelectric power generation potential. It is connected to other areas by daily flights through Imphal airport, the second largest in northeastern India. Manipur is home to many sports, the origin of Manipuri dance, and credited with introducing polo to Europeans.
