  • June 03 to June 08, 1984:   Duration of the operation.
  • April, 1983:   Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his armed followers who had made the complex buildings. as their fort and headquarters in April 1983.
  • October 31, 1984:   Four months after the operation, on this day, Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, was assassinated by Satwant Singh and Beant Singh who were her two Sikh bodyguards, in what is viewed as an act of vengeance. Subsequently, more than 3,000 Sikhs were killed in the ensuing anti-Sikh riots in 1984.
  • July 10, 1985:   The soldiers and generals involved in the Operation were presented with gallantry awards, honours, decoration strips and promotions by the Indian President Zail Singh, a Sikh, in a ceremony conducted on this day
Description
  • It was ordered by the then Prime Minister of India, Smt. Indira Gandhi, in order to establish control over the Harmandir Sahib Complex in Amritsar, Punjab, and remove Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his armed followers who had made the complex buildings. as their fort and headquarters.
  • The operation was carried out by Indian Army troops; the resistance from within the temple complex was so fierce that the army suffered heavy initial casualties and had to call for the support of tanks, artillery, helicopters, armored vehicles, etc.
  • After the huge exchange of fire from both sides, there were large casualties both in the army as well as the civilians.
  • Some reports placed Indian army deaths at around 136 and injuries at 220. According to the official estimate presented by the Indian government, 493 civilians were killed, though numbers put forward by independent human rights organizations are significantly higher.
  • The military action led to an uproar amongst Sikhs worldwide and the increased tension following the action led to assaults on members of the Sikh community within India.
  • Many Sikh soldiers in the Indian army mutinied, many Sikhs resigned from armed and civil administrative office and several returned awards and honours they had received from the Indian government.
