- 1947:
Govt. of India agreed to a special
protectorate status for Sikkim.
- Apr 26, 1975: Indian
Parliament passed a bill to make Sikkim a State of India
which was effected on May 16.
- May 16, 1975:
Sikkim became the 22nd state of the Indian Union, and the
monarchy was abolished, as a result of the referendum that was held in which
97.5 per cent of voters supported abolishing the
monarchy, and effectively approving union with India.
- 1975: The Prime Minister of Sikkim
appealed to the Indian Parliament for
Sikkim to become a state of India.

Description |
- India controlled its external affairs, defence,
diplomacy and communications, but Sikkim otherwise retained
administrative autonomy.
- It is a landlocked Indian state located
in the Himalayan mountains.
- The state borders Nepal to the west,
China's Tibet Autonomous Region to the
north and east, and Bhutan to the east. The
Indian state of West Bengal lies to the
south.
- It is the least populous state in India
and the second-smallest state after Goa in total area.
- Kangchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak, is
located on Sikkim's border with Nepal.
- Sikkim is a popular tourist destination,
owing to its culture, scenery and biodiversity.
- It also has the only open land border between
India and China.
- It is the only state in India with an ethnic
Nepali majority.
