- January 24, 1857: The
University of Calcutta is formally founded on this day as
the first full-fledged Western style university in south
Asia.
- January 30, 1858: On this
day, the Syndicate of the Calcutta University started
functioning.
- July 28, 1879:
ELECTRIC LIGHTING - This day marked the first public
demonstration of the electric lights in Calcutta, India.
- 2001: The university was
awarded the status of a ‘five star university’ by the
National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
- December 08, 2005: The
Indian University Grants Commission declared Calcutta
University as a ‘‘University with Potential for
Excellence’’.
- January 05, 2010: The
National Assessment and Accreditation Council awarded its
highest grade of 'A' to the university.

Description |
- In India it is recognized as a "Five-Star University"
and a "Centre with Potential for Excellence" by the
University Grants Commission and the National Assessment and
Accreditation Council.
- Nobel laureates like Ronald Ross, Rabindranath Tagore,
C. V. Raman and Amartya Sen had been associated with this
university.
- The university has the highest number of students who
have cleared the doctoral entrance eligibility exam in
Natural Science & Arts conducted by Government of India's
National Eligibility Test to become eligible to pursue
research with full scholarship awarded by the Government of
India.
