  • March 07, 1971:   Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared that, "The current struggle is a struggle for independence", in a public meeting attended by almost a million people in Dhaka.
  • March 25, 1971:   After several days of strikes and non-co-operation movements, the Pakistani military cracked down on Dhaka on the night of of this day. Sheikh Mujibur Rehman of the Awami League was arrested by Paki forces and taken to West Pakistan.
  • March 26, 1971:   East Pakistan had officially seceded from Pakistan on this day, when a major in the army declared independence of Bangladesh on behalf of Mujibur Rehman.
  • March 27, 1971:   Prime Minister Indira Gandhi expressed full support of her government for the independence struggle of the people of East Pakistan.
  • April 17, 1971:   Exiled leaders of Awami League formed a provisional government.
  • April 28, 1971:   On this day, General Manekshaw (Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee) was asked to go into East Pakistan. Exiled East Pakistan army officers and members of the Indian Intelligence immediately started using the Indian refugee camps for recruitment and training of Mukti Bahini guerrillas.
  • November 23, 1971:   On this day, Yahya Khan declared a state of emergency in all of Pakistan and told his people to prepare for war.
  • December 03, 1971:   The war began with Operation Chengiz Khan, Pakistani air attacks on 11 Indian airbases on this day.
  • December 04-05, 1971:   Indian Navy attacked Karachi's port on the night of 4–5 December, using missile boats, sinking Pakistani destroyer PNS Khyber and minesweeper PNS Muhafiz; besides other huge losses.
  • December 06, 1971:   India recognized East Pakistan as Bangladesh. Pakistan broke the diplomatic relations with India on this day, soon after India's recognition of Bangladesh as an independent sovereign country.
  • December 08-09, 1971:   On the night of 8–9 December, the Indian missile boats attacked the Karachi port, resulting in further destruction of reserve fuel tanks and the sinking of three Pakistani merchant ships.
  • December 09, 1971:   Pakistani submarine PNS Hangor sank the Indian frigate INS Khukri in the Arabian Sea, resulting in a loss of 18 officers and 176 sailors.
  • December 14, 1971:   Being on the brink of defeat, the Pakistani Army systematically killed a large number of Bengali doctors, teachers and intellectuals, etc. killing over a million of innocent people
  • December 16, 1971:   Lieutenant-General A. A. K. Niazi, supreme commander of Pakistani Army in East Pakistan, surrendered to the Allied Forces (Mitro Bahini) represented by Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Arora of Indian Army at the surrender. India and Bangladesh gain victory.
  • January 10, 1972:   SHEIKH MUJIBUR RAHMAN   returned to the newly independent Bangladesh as its President after spending over nine months in prison in Pakistan.     
  • January 12, 1972:   Sheikh MUjibur Rehman came to Power as President of Bangladesh.
  • July 02, 1972:   About 90,000 Pakistani prisoners of war (POWs) were released by India only after the negotiation and signing of the Simla Agreement on this day.
Description
  • It was a confrontation between India and Pakistan during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.
  •  About 93,000 Pakistanis were taken prisoner by the Indian Army which included about 81,000 uniformed personnel of Pakistan Armed Forces.
  • As a result of the conflict, a further eight to ten million people fled the country at the time to seek refuge in neighbouring India.
  • The United States supported Pakistan both politically and materially.
