- During the First World War, and
soon after attaining the age of 18
years, he served the Royal
Flying Corps and its
successor, the Royal Air
Force.
- He was commissioned as a
second lieutenant
in July, 1917.
- After about six months in
service, he was injured in the
process of crash landing.
- On his return to active service,
he achieved ten victories in
thirteen days (from July 06 to 19,
1918).
- He is the first and only
Indian flying air ace to
this day.
- He claimed five aircraft
destroyed in just over 170
hours flying time.
- He was killed over Carvin on
22 July 1918 while
flying in formation in a dog fight.
- His nephew Subroto
Mukerjee too was a fighter
pilot who later became the
first Indian Chief of Air staff
of the Indian Air Force.
- He was posthumously awarded the
Distinguished Flying Cross
(DFC) in September 1918 for his
actions during the period of
6–19 July 1918.
