Description |
- The Nations Convention states, in part, that the UN is:
"concerned about the seriousness of problems and threats
posed by corruption to the stability and security of
societies, undermining the institutions and values of
democracy, ethical values and justice and jeopardizing
sustainable development and the rule of law" and delegates
to the Convention the power to: "promote and strengthen
measures to prevent and combat corruption more efficiently
and effectively... promote, facilitate and support
international cooperation and technical assistance in the
prevention of and fight against corruption… [and] promote
integrity, accountability and proper management of public
affairs and public property…"
- The "Your NO Counts" campaign is a joint international
campaign created by the United Nations Development Programme
and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to mark
International Anti-Corruption Day (9 December) and raise
awareness about corruption and how to fight it.
- The 2009 joint international campaign focused on how
corruption:
- hinders efforts to achieve the internationally
agreed upon Millennium Development Goals (MDGs),
- undermines democracy and the rule of law,
- leads to human rights violations,
- distorts markets,
- erodes quality of life and
- allows organized crime, terrorism and other threats
to human security to flourish.
- Corruption:
- is a complex social, political and economic
phenomenon that affects all countries.
- undermines democratic institutions,
- slows economic development and
- contributes to governmental instability.
- attacks the foundation of democratic institutions
by:
- distorting electoral processes,
- perverting the rule of law and
- creating bureaucratic quagmires whose only
reason for existing is the soliciting of bribes.
- Economic development is stunted because foreign
direct investment is discouraged and small
businesses within the country often find it
impossible to overcome the "start-up costs" required
because of corruption.
- Governments, the private sector, non-governmental
organizations, the media and citizens around the world are
joining forces to fight this crime. The United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Office
on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) are at the forefront of these
efforts.
- The 2015 joint international campaign focuses on how
corruption undermines democracy and the rule of law, leads
to human rights violations, distorts markets, erodes quality
of life and allows organized crime, terrorism and other
threats to human security to flourish.
- The campaign #breakthechain also highlights that
corruption is a cross-cutting crime, impacting many areas.
- It shows that acting against corruption is imperative to
achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to
end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for
all.
