INTERNATIONAL
NURSES DAY |
|
Date-wise Events |
May 12, Every Year |
|
Description |
- It is observed to mark the contributions nurses make to
society. ICN's goals are to bring nurses' organizations
together in a worldwide body, to advance the socio-economic
status of nurses and the profession of nursing worldwide,
and to influence global and domestic health policy.
- The International Council of Nurses (ICN)
has been celebrating this day since 1965.
- In January 1974, 12 May was chosen to celebrate the day
as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence
Nightingale, who is widely considered the founder
of modern nursing.
- Each year, ICN prepares and distributes the International Nurses' Day Kit, that contains
educational and public information materials, for use by
nurses everywhere.
- The International Council of Nurses (ICN) is a
federation of more than 130 national nurses
associations.
- It was founded in 1899 and was the
first international organization for health care
professionals.
- It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
- Membership is limited to one nursing
organization per nation.
- Nursing is a profession within the health care sector
focused on the care of individuals, families, and
communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal
health and quality of life.
- Nurses may be differentiated from other health care
providers by their approach to patient care, training, and
scope of practice.
- Nurses practice in a wide diversity of practice areas
with a different scope of practice and
level of prescriber authority in each.
- Of late, nurse education has undergone
a process of diversification towards advanced and
specialized credentials, and many of the traditional
regulations and provider roles are changing.
