- 1965: After his graduation,
he joined the office of the High Energy Materials Research
Laboratory (HEMRLaa), which later became part of DRDO, in
Pune. During his tenure in the DRDO in 1965 he joined the
agitation started by All India Federation of Scheduled
Caste/Tribes Backward Class & Minorities Employees Welfare
Associations of Government of India to prevent the abolition
of a holiday commemorating Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's birthday.
- 1971: He founded the All
India Backward and Minority Communities Employees'
Federation (BAMCEF).
- 1984: He founded the
Bahujan Samaj Party.
- April 14, 1984: He became
the National President of the Bahujan Samaj Party.
- 1991 to 1996: He remained
member of the Indian Parliament during this period.
- 1995: He was already a
diabetic and he suffered from a heart attack in 1994
followed by the formation of a clot in the brain artery in
1995.
- 1995: His leadership
brought the party to power in Uttar Pradesh in 1995,
whereafter Mayawati became the state's Chief Minister.
- December 15, 2001: He publicly announced
Kumari Mayawati as his successor.
- September 18, 2003: He
relinquished his office of the National President of the
Bahujan Samaj Party.

- He was the founder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
- His mission was to achieve the goal of serving the
traditionally lower castes of Indian society.
- Though he found considerable success in Uttar
Pradesh, yet he had to struggle a lot to bridge the divide
between Dalits and Other Backward classes.
- He became the Member of Parliament and represented the
11th Lok Sabha from Hoshiarpur Constituency, though he was
also elected as member of Lok Sabha from Etawah in Uttar
Pradesh.
- According to his wish, his last rituals were performed
as per buddhist tradition. His ashes were placed in Urn and
kept at Prerna Sthal, with huge procession accompanied by
lakhs of supporters.
