Description |
- One of the Many Misadventures of
Pakistan's Maladministration.
- It was an armed conflict between India and Pakistan that
took place in the Kargil district of Kashmir
and elsewhere along the Line of Control (LOC).
- In India, the conflict is referred to as
Operation Vijay , as it succeeded to clear the
Kargil sector of the Paki infiltrators.
- The cause of the war was the infiltration of
Pakistani soldiers and Kashmiri militants into positions on
the Indian side of the LOC, which serves as the de
facto border between the two states.
- The Indian Army, later on supported by the Indian Air
Force, recaptured a majority of the
positions on the Indian side of the LOC infiltrated by the
Pakistani troops and militants.
- The Pakistani forces were forced, as usual, to
withdraw from the remaining Indian positions along
the LOC.
- Incidentally, this was the first example of an armed
conflict in the world between two States possessing
nuclear weapons.
- The Operation Vijay was started on May 26, 1999
and was completed on the July 14, 1999 and
the Kargil area was fully cleaned of the bad blood by the
July 26, 1999; the day has since been
marked as Kargil Vijay Diwas (Kargil
Victory Day) in India.
- By the end of the war, India had resumed control of all
territory south and east of the Line of Control, as was
established in July 1972 as per the Simla Agreement.
- Apart from Anuj Nayyar, Vikram Batra and Yogender Yadav,
there were many other heroes whose courage and resolve gave
India a decisive victory.
