  •  'Rajya Gayika' (State Singer) of the State of Maharashtra, India.
  • She was an Indian classical vocalist of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana.
  • She was a disciple to Ustad Alladiya Khan, the founder of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, beginning in 1921.
Awards & Accolades 1969 – Padma Bhushan award from Govt. of India.
1969 – She was awarded the title ‘Rajya Gayika’.
1948 - Her honorific title "Surashri" was bestowed on her by the Sangeet Pravin Sangitanuragi Sajjan Sammaan Samiti of Calcutta.
Commemoration
  • In her ancestral village of Keri, Goa, the Surashree Kesarbai Kerkar High School is situated in her former house.
  • A music festival called the Surashree Kesarbai Kerkar Smriti Sangeet Samaroha is held in Goa each November.
  • A music scholarship in her name is awarded annually to a University of Mumbai student.
  • Since 2000, several CDs of her archival recordings have been released.
  • Her song ‘Jaat Kahan Ho’ based on raga Bhairavi, was included on the Voyager Golden Record, which was sent to space aboard Voyager 1 and 2 space craft in 1977.
  • Voyager Golden Records contain sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and are intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or for future humans, who may find them.
