first Governor-General of
the independent Dominion of India
(1947–48), from which the modern
Republic of India was to emerge in
1950.
- During his meeting with Jinnah
on 5 April 1947, he tried to
persuade Jinnah of a united India,
but the Muslim leader was unyielding
in his goal of establishing a
separate Muslim state called
Pakistan.
- When India and Pakistan
attained independence at midnight on
the night of 14–15 August 1947,
Mountbatten remained in New Delhi
for 10 months, serving as India's
first governor general until June
1948.
