- 1914: He began his career
as an advocate in the Madras High Court and soon he gained
expertise especially in tax laws.
- 1922: He was appointed
standing counsel to the Commissioner of Income Tax in
recognition of his abilities in this field.
- March 15, 1939: He was
elevated as member of the Bench of the Commissioner of
Income Tax (C.I.T.) on this day.
- December 06, 1947: He was
made a judge of the Federal Court, which subsequently became
the Supreme Court.
- November 07, 1951: He
became the Chief Justice of India on this day. This happened
as a consequence of the unexpected death of the then Chief
Justice, Sir Harilal Kania, on November 06,
1951.
- 1953 to 1956: He was the
pro-chancellor of Delhi University.
- January 03, 1954: He
retired as the Chief Justice of India on this day.
- July 1958 to April 1962: He
served on the Madras Legislative Council.

- He was the son of Pandit Krishna Sastri, senior Sanskrit
pandit of Pachaiyappa's College, Madras.
- He was also an eminent Sanskrit Scholar.
