- One of the dominating musical forces in
Indian Cinema in the 1950s and early 1960s.
- An important figure in the Progressive Writers'
Movement, which was a progressive literary movement
in the pre-partition India, consisting of writers across the
world who sought to inspire people through their writings
advocating equality and attacking social injustice and
oppression.
- In his career spanning six decades, he worked
with almost all music directors of his time, from
Naushad, Madan Mohan, S.D.Burman, Roshan, Ravi,
Shankar-Jaikishan, O.P.Nayyar, Usha Khanna, Laxmikant
Pyarelal, Anu Malik, R.D.Burman and Rajesh Roshan to
A.R.Rahman.
- He wrote nearly 4000 songs, and
his success rate in terms of popularity of songs was 95 per
