- 1883: He passed his law
examination and started practising at Kanpur. Subsequently
the High Court shifted base to Allahabad, so he settled
there.
- 1909: He reached the
pinnacle of his legal career by gaining the approval to
appear in the Privy Council of Great Britain.
- 1918: Under the influence
of Mahatma Gandhi, he became one of the first to transform
his life to exclude western clothes and material goods,
adopting a more native Indian lifestyle.
- February 05, 1919: He
launched a new daily paper, the Independent.
- 1919-1920: He served as the
Congress President.
- 1922: He was arrested
during the Non-Cooperation Movement. Although initially
close to Gandhi, he openly criticised Gandhi's suspension of
civil resistance in 1922 due to the murder of policemen by a
riotous mob in Chauri Chaura in Uttar Pradesh.
- January 01, 1923: On this
day, he formed the Swarajist Party
- 1928: He chaired the famous
Nehru Commission, a counter to the all-British Simon
Commission. The Nehru Report, the first constitution written
by Indians only, envisioned a dominion status for India
within the Empire, akin to Australia, New Zealand and
Canada. While it was endorsed by the Congress Party, it was
rejected by more nationalist Indians who sought complete
independence.
- 1928-1929: He served as the
Congress President.
- 1929: He handed over the
Congress presidency to his son Jawaharlal.

- He was an important leader of the Indian National
Congress.
- He was the founder patriarch of India's most powerful
political family, the Nehru-Gandhi family.
- Mahatma Gandhi was in no way related to this family
(although he was friends with Jawaharlal Nehru). The
'Gandhi' surname comes from Feroze Gandhi, whom Indira
Priyadarshini (the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru) married,
and later chose to change her name to Indira Gandhi after
marriage.
- He was the first Chairman of the Board of Directors of
The Leader, a leading daily published from Allahabad.
