- 1981: He was honoured with
Padma Bhushan Award by the Govt of India.
- 1985: President François Mitterrand, the
President of France, awarded him the Commandeur de Ordre des
Arts et des Lettres (Commander of the Order of Arts
and Letters), the highest civilian honour conferred
by that country, in recognition of significant contributions
to the arts, literature, or the propagation of these fields.
- 1998 - 2003: He was made an Honorary Member of the
Indian Parliament from 1998 to 2003.
- 2000: President Vladimir Putin of the Russian
federation honoured him with the Order of Friendship.
- 2005: Dadasaheb Phalke Award,
the highest honour given to an Indian filmmaker, was awarded
to him by the Government of India.

- One of the greatest ambassadors of Indian
parallel cinema on the global stage.
- His cinema is also known for its artistic depiction of
social reality, just like the works of his
contenporaries, viz. Satyajit Ray and
Ritwik Ghatak.
- He charted his own path of the parallel cinema, as a
counterpoint to the mainstream Hindi cinema in India.
- As a student in Calcutta, he got involved with the
cultural wing of the Communist Party of India.
- Although he started his career as medical
representative, but very soon he took up a job of an audio
technician in a film studio in Calcutta.
- He made his debut by making his first feature film,
Raat Bhore, in 1955, which went virtually
unnoticed.
- But he was able to earn local recognition through his
second film, Neel Akasher Neechey (Under
the Blue Sky), while he got his international fame through
his third film, Baishey Shravan.
- His film, Bhuvan Shome (Mr. Shome),
finally projected Mrinal Sen him as a major filmmaker, both
nationally and internationally.
- Bhuvan Shome also initiated the "New
Cinema" film movement in India.
