- He was an Indian writer in English, notable for his
depiction of the lives of the poorer castes in traditional
Indian society.
- He started his writing career with an essay in response
to the suicide of an aunt, who had been excommunicated by
his family for sharing a meal with a Muslim.
- His first main novel, Untouchable, published in 1935,
was a brave exposure of the day-to-day life of a member of
India's untouchable caste.
- It is the story of a single day in the life of Bakha, a
toilet-cleaner, who accidentally bumps into a member of a
higher caste.He is considered as one of twentieth century’s
best-known Indian writers and a major voice against social
injustices.
- He is also Best known for his novel ‘Coolie’, which was
made famous by the film of the same name.
- Being also a great enthusiast of promoting fine arts, he
was appointed chairman of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1970.
- His works have been translated into several languages.
