  • She got married at the age of 19, on 10 May 1613, to Prince Khurram, later known as Emperor Shah Jahan.
  •  Shah Jahan conferred upon her the title "Mumtaz Mahal".
  • She was Shah Jahan's third wife and was his favourite.
  • She died in Burhanpur in the Deccan (now in Madhya Pradesh) during the birth of their 14th child.
  • Her children included Aurangzeb; the Imperial Prince Dara Shikoh,  and Jahanara Begum, the Imperial Princess.
  • After her death, Shah Jahan went into secluded mourning for a year.
  • Her body was later disinterred in Burhanpur in December 1631 and transported to Agra, where it was interred in a small building on the banks of the Yamuna River.
Commemoration
  • Shah Jahan began planning the design and construction of a suitable mausoleum for her.
  • It was a task that would take more than 22 years to complete: the Taj Mahal of today.
